The briefing supports amendments from Independent Peer Lord Low which is due for debate today (29th February).
The amendments would mean that Clauses 13 & 14 (the £30 a week cut to Employment and Support Allowance and Universal Credit for many new claimants) could be brought in only after a thorough and wide ranging assessment has been made of the impact of the cut on disabled people. A report would then need to be laid before both houses followed by a vote.
This reflects the concerns of disabled people and their families that the Government has not fully understood how the cut would affect people’s ability to move towards work and undertake work related activity such as work experience, volunteering, education and training.
The assessment would also look at the impact on disabled people’s physical and mental health as well their finances.
